The total export value from all forestry products for 2013 was $4.478 billion.

Of the total export value, the logs alone was $1.854 billion and timber, panels and pulp combined value was $1.770 billion.

There were 50,000 hectares of forestry harvested in 2013 (a 5% rise from 2012). About 17.6 million cubic metres of wood and log were exported in 2013 which was 15% more than 2012.

Catchment Management

Large scale forestry activities, both establishment and harvest will have positive and negative effects on the environment. While harvest potentially affects water quality and increases water flow, forestation will result in improved water quality but with reduced water flow. Such effects could be managed with proactive measures and liaison with the local regional and district councils.
