Of the sheep & beef export, sheep fetched $3.5 billion (which includes meat, wool, carpet and other wool products) while beef export value was $2.14 billion.

Sheep

There were 30.8 million sheep (0.476 million down from 2012) in New Zealand in 2013. In the same year the export value of lamb and mutton was $2.263 billion and $0.395 billion respectively.

There were 3.73 million beef cattle in 2013, which was 120,000 less than 2012’s 3.85 million. Despite this in 2013 the export value of our beef was $2.143 billion which is the third highest export earner within the ag-hort sector in New Zealand.
