In 2013 the export value of commercial vegetables was $0.6 billion and revenue from the domestic market was $1 billion.

Of the vegetable export, processed vegetables were about 64%. In 2013 the commercial vegetable growing land area in New Zealand was about 50,000 ha.

Vegetable Growing Continued

Apart from water and nutrients vegetable growing does require excellent soils and climate or glass (or hot) houses. On a land area basis the revenues generated are high. By extrapolating it could be estimated as $30,000/ha in 2013. With export value alone the return per ha was $12,000.
