In 2013 the export value for venison, velvet and co-products was $0.17, 0.18 and 0.21 billion respectively.

Deer Farming

Venison export by weight peaked in 2005 to around 27,500 tonnes and declined until 2009 and remained static at around 15,000 tonnes/year.

Deer Farming Continued

The 2013 deer population was 1.06 million which was a 3% drop from that of 2012. Deer population has been dropping since 2004. Despite the drop, the export contribution of the deer farming/industry to NZ economy is still a significant $560 million.
